The NIOSH Division of Safety Research has released a new website entitled Fire Fighter Fatality Map. Developed to increase awareness of fire fighter deaths and to provide quick access to up-to-date fire fighter fatality information, the site combines fire fighter fatality case information from the USFA with information about NIOSH fire fighter fatality investigations. Links to NIOSH reports for fatalities that have been investigated through the NIOSH Fire Fighter Fatality Investigation and Prevention Program (FFFIPP) are included.
National Safety Culture Change Initiative – project USFA is performing with the IAFC
This study supports the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation Life Safety Initiative #1: Define and advocate the need for a cultural change within the fire service relating to safety; incorporating leadership, management, supervision, accountability and personal responsibility.
In addition to USFA and the IAFC, representatives of other federal agencies and national fire service organizations are working on this initiative, including the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, International Association of Fire Fighters, National Volunteer Fire Council, National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, National Fire Protection Association and Cumberland Valley Volunteer Firemen’s Association. Project deliverables developed will include checklists and informational materials for fire chiefs, officers and firefighters; training materials and assessment tools for fire departments and a dedicated website.
Further information on this project can be found on this page of the USFA website: http://www.usfa.fema.gov/fireservice/firefighter_health_safety/safety/risk_taking_behaviors/
